Summary: Fueled by the ongoing AI boom, large‑scale data center construction is accelerating, bringing new growth opportunities to diesel generators, a traditional piece of equipment.

Currently, the high‑power diesel generator market for data centers is dominated by multinational industry leaders including Rolls‑Royce, Cummins and Caterpillar. Media reports indicate that major manufacturers such as these three have pushed out production schedules for high‑power backup generators for data centers all the way to 2027 and 2028.
Domestic diesel generator manufacturers are also reaping benefits from the data center construction surge. During an investor conference call, Weichai Power disclosed that global power demand for data centers is growing at a rapid pace. In the first quarter, its power and energy products sales hit 30,000 units, a year‑on‑year rise of 21%. Sales of large‑bore engines exceeded 3,000 units, up 21% year‑on‑year. Sales of engines for data centers surpassed 500 units, surging more than 240% year‑on‑year. The company is seeing robust order backlogs, and the power and energy business is set to make an even greater contribution to overall performance.
Weichai Power’s Q1 2026 financial results show the company recorded operating revenue of RMB 62.56 billion, an 8.9% year‑on‑year increase; net profit attributable to parent company stood at RMB 3.09 billion, up 13.8% year‑on‑year, reflecting steady improvement in operational efficiency.
Alongside its Q1 report, Weichai Power released an announcement on the adjustment of the use of some raised funds. It proposed cutting funding for the industrialization project of full‑series hydraulic powertrains and large‑scale CVT powertrains, and increasing investment in the large‑bore high‑end engine construction project as well as permanently supplementing working capital.
This confirms that driven by explosive global power demand for data centers, Weichai Power is shifting resources toward power‑generation‑oriented products to better meet market demand.
A diesel generator is a power device that runs on diesel fuel, using a diesel engine as the prime mover to drive a generator for power production. A complete diesel generator set mainly consists of an engine, generator, controller and other auxiliary components. The engine is the core component of the unit, accounting for 60%‑70% of total costs.
Data center power distribution systems have stringent requirements. High‑tier data centers are mandated to be equipped with backup power supplies, and diesel generators are the mainstream backup power solution with demanding performance standards. According to Schneider Electric data, diesel generator sets account for approximately 8.6% of total data center construction costs. Hence, demand for diesel generator sets is expected to grow significantly alongside rising capital expenditure in data centers.
The AI boom has spurred soaring computing power demand and a wave of data center building. A McKinsey report released in June forecasts that global data center capacity will rise from roughly 82 GW in 2025 to around 220 GW by 2030, nearly tripling. AI‑related demand will jump from about 44 GW to 155 GW, representing a 3.5‑fold increase.
At present, U.S. tech giants are pouring massive capital into AI infrastructure. According to a rough tally by Jiemian News, major tech firms including Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft and Meta disclosed combined full‑year capital expenditure plans of nearly USD 800 billion in July.
Alphabet, Google’s parent company, was the first to raise its full‑year capital expenditure guidance to USD 195‑205 billion in mid‑July. In an earnings call, Alphabet CFO Anat Ashkenazi stated that Google Cloud’s order backlog exceeds USD 514 billion, and computing power shortages will persist for at least two years. Meta lifted its full‑year capital expenditure outlook from USD 125 billion to USD 130‑145 billion. Meta CFO Susan Lee noted on the conference call that the industry faces long‑term insufficient computing power supply. The company will maximize data‑center construction speed in 2026‑2027, advancing mega‑supercomputing park projects worth USD 14 billion in Texas and USD 50 billion in Louisiana.
Domestically, Alibaba is rolling out a RMB 380‑billion AI infrastructure plan, with data‑center expansion as a key capital‑spending item. Tencent’s latest semi‑annual report shows that to support model and application iteration, the company has substantially scaled up computing‑power procurement. Its H1 2026 capital expenditure reached RMB 84.72 billion, a year‑on‑year increase of 82%. Q2 capital expenditure alone hit RMB 52.784 billion, mainly allocated to data centers, servers and other AI infrastructure.
Relevant statistics show that China’s demand for diesel generators for intelligent computing is projected to surge from 4,426 units in 2024 to 12,327 units by 2027, pushing the market size past RMB 50 billion. Mordor Intelligence data indicates the global data‑center generator market stood at USD 7.22 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach USD 9.14 billion by 2029, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.85% over 2024‑2029.
A recent research report by Huaxi Securities points out that diesel generators for data centers are facing widespread order shortages amid strong industry prosperity. Both domestic and overseas manufacturers are operating with back‑logged orders and expanding production capacity. The domestic industrial chain covering diesel generator sets, engines and upstream components is poised to benefit substantially.
