Vehicles with license plates from Jiangsu, Henan, Shandong, Anhui and other provinces were transporting the company’s diesel generator sets to destinations across China.

"Nearly 20 trucks enter the plant for loading every day since the start of this year, and the workshop maintains a hectic delivery schedule nonstop," said Manager Chen in charge of the warehouse at the Cummins Power Generation Wuhan plant.
Inside the final assembly workshop, cyan-housed diesel generator sets are neatly arranged. Large, square and robust, the units stand nearly as tall as an adult. Workers carry out assembly operations behind work railings, with electronic screens displaying real-time workstation data. The plant boasts an annual production capacity of 14,500 units, offering generator sets covering a power range of 55 kVA to 3,000 kVA.
On-site technical staff explained that a diesel generator set consists of a diesel engine coupled with an alternator. In the event of mains power failure, the equipment can start automatically within seconds to supply backup power for data centers, hospitals, manufacturing plants and other facilities. For data centers, power outages may trigger server downtime and data loss, making generator sets the "last line of defense" ensuring continuous operation of computing hardware.

What underpins the soaring demand for backup power? Lin Xinhua, General Manager of Cummins Power Generation (China) Co., Ltd., stated that robust demand is mainly driven by global investment in AI computing infrastructure. Data centers impose stringent requirements on power stability and reliability, which has directly pushed up demand for diesel backup generator sets.

 

"Data centers nationwide require uninterrupted power supply. Investment in AI computing capacity is rising rapidly. Our products are now in short supply, and new orders mostly come from intelligent computing centers and data center projects."

Multiple investment institutions analyze that strong demand for backup power systems from data centers has become a key growth driver for Cummins Power Generation (China) Co., Ltd.
It is reported that in the first half of this year, operating revenue generated by diesel generator sets manufactured at the Cummins Power Generation Wuhan plant hit an all-time high. Among this business, revenue related to AI computing data center projects surged 107%, while exports rose 115% year-on-year. Overseas orders account for an increasingly large share of the company’s business, covering more than 70 countries and regions.
Domestically, Cummins Power Generation equipment has been deployed in multiple projects across seven hubs of the national East Data, West Computing initiative. Thousands of units provide backup power for data centers in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and Inner Mongolia. Its client base includes major domestic internet enterprises, financial institutions and data center operators.
Cummins Power Generation (China) Co., Ltd. settled in Wuhan in 2009. It is one of five global standard power production bases of US-based Cummins. Its annual output value has jumped from less than 200 million yuan in the early years to approximately 5 billion yuan in 2025, representing more than 26-fold growth. To meet sustained strong market demand, the company plans to roll out more generator sets with emission certifications, delivering higher-power and eco-friendlier configurations to satisfy fast-growing demand across sectors including domestic and overseas AI computing infrastructure.
